Thursday Thoughts

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”

Photo's to Inspire - Fall Colors

A couple of weeks ago DJ from Eye Shutter to Think commented on how nature is her source of inspiration. You can see that in the pieces she sells her Etsy Shop.
I too enjoy nature and this is my favorite time of the year, so today's photo's are of beautiful fall foliage from the pages of Flickr.

Artist to Know - Thomas Mann

Thomas Mann

He describes himself as a working artist in the medium of jewelry and sculpture.
He makes jewelry objects combining industrial aesthetics and materials and with romantic themes and imagery. He calls this design system Techno.Romantic¨.

Here is a paragraph from his artist statement about why he creates:

In my case, the realization was that my love of making jewelry was not just about making jewelry but about making "objects". That designing and making jewelry could actually mean more than producing objects of adornment. That it could be a means of personal expression which might affect people in a much more serious and purposeful way. That it might provide an opportunity for the real communication of ideas and, most importantly, that it could provide the stimulating and inspiring raw material for the imagination. In short, I no longer saw jewelry as jewelry but as a medium of artistic expression akin to that of painting or sculpture.

He has been designing jewelry since the early 70's and lives and works in New Orleans where he oversees a jewelry design and production studio, a sculpture studio, and gallery. He currently exhibits his jewelry and sculpture in about 250 galleries and stores in the US and abroad, and at premier craft events around the US.

Shop News

It was a slow week in my shop, but it did help me to get a large order done and to work on some inventory for a show I have next weekend.

I got some great news this past week, I found out one of my pieces is going to be published in a book that is going to sold all over the world. The book comes out on November 1 and I will share more info in the next couple of weeks.

On my visit to Minneapolis to see my sister, I went to my favorite recycled hardware shop, and found some cool new stuff, so watch out for new items coming soon to my Etsy shop.
Etsy Item of the week

25% off One Week Only (10/10 - 10/17)

Blog News

I found a new way to advertise on a variety of blogs and it does not cost anything. It's called Indie Style Media and its an ad exchange program. Check it out on the right side bar.

Awaken Your Creativity - Journal Styles

Keeping a journal or a sketchbook is a personal experience for everyone, and only you can find the best approach to suit your needs for creative expression.

Lucky for us their is more then one way to keep a journal or sketchbook, and more then one type of journal/sketchbook you can work in.

Besides a written journal where you can work out the emotional aspects of your art and process, or a standard sketchbook where you work out your design development, you can also have a visual journal, a technical journal, and a business journal.

A Visual Journal - is used to record, collect, and explore objects, subjects, situations, and experiences. The information in your visual journal should expand your design thinking, explore your aspects of visual design, and become a central resource for your work. Your visual journal could include sketches, drawings, diagrams, sample objects, photo's, literature, or anything stimulating.

I love art and jewelry magazines for inspiration, so my visual journal is a binder with ripped out pages from the magazines in page protectors. It also helps so I don't have stacks and stacks of magazines all over my house.

Find a way to collect your inspiration in a format that you will have easy access for everyday use.

A Technical Journal - can be used as part of you regular sketchbook and journal process. Save some space to record your process of exploration, and the outcome. Think of it as a recipe book. Use it to record supplies, where to purchase them, how they are used, and special requirements. A technical journal is one way to avoid having to constantly reinvent the wheel.

A Business Journal - is a place to track your business activities connected to your business. I use my planner to track my business activities, and with the information I gather I hope to be able to set better goals for next year.

Which ever type of journal you choose to use, each one will help you discover your creative style and guide you to create and run your business.

Have you ever tried any of these types of journals? Share your experience of how keeping one has helped in your creative process.

Exploring Creativity with Food

I am going to see my sister this weekend in Minneapolis and looking forward to the drive. We will spend a lot of time laughing, and hanging out enjoying each others company.
We are both on a tight budget and decided that whatever we do needs to be free, and as much as we love to go out to eat it just won't fit into the budget . So the plan is to try a few new recipes and get creative with our food.

Here are a couple of recipes I found on the Food Network website that we are going to try this weekend, maybe you would like to give them a try too.

Fried Rice

Ingredients
1/3 cup plain vegetable oil, like soy, corn, or peanut
1/3 pound black forest ham, diced, or about 2 cups cooked, cubed or shredded meat
1 onion, diced
Salt and pepper
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
3 whole scallions, thinly sliced on the bias, white and green separated
1 1/3 cups (6 ounces) medley frozen corn, peas, carrots
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
4 cups cold cooked long-grain rice, white or jasmine rice, grains separated

Directions
Heat a large heavy-bottomed nonstick skillet over high heat. When hot add 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add the ham and cook stirring occasionally until lightly browned. Add the onions to the pan, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until onion is fragrant Add the garlic, ginger, and scallion whites and stir-fry until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the frozen vegetables. Cook until just defrosted but still crisp. Transfer contents of the skillet to a large bowl.

Return the pan to the heat and add 2 more tablespoons of oil. Add the eggs and season with salt and pepper. Stir the eggs constantly and cook until almost set but still moist, then transfer egg to the bowl. Break the eggs up with a wooden spoon or spatula.

Return the pan to the heat and add the remaining oil. Add the rice to the pan and use a spoon to break up any clumps. Season with salt and pepper and stir-fry the rice to coat evenly with oil. Stop stirring, and then let the rice cook undisturbed until its gets slightly crispy, about 2 minutes. Stir the rice again, breaking up any new clumps. Add the scallion greens. Transfer to the bowl. Stir all the ingredients together with the rice, taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, if necessary. Serve.

I made this recipe a couple of weeks ago and it was really easy and tasty. I did change a few things, I used a couple of cooked pork chops that I diced instead of ham and I cubed fresh carrots, celery, and peas instead of frozen. After all the chopping it only took a couple of minutes to cook.

Udon Noodles with Miso Poached Tilapia

Ingredients
1 (32-ounce) container vegetable broth
3 tablespoons miso paste
1 cup sake or white wine
3 1/2 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and sliced
3 scallions, sliced diagonally into 1/2-inch pieces, plus chopped scallions, for garnish
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 pound tilapia fillets
12 ounces udon noodles

Directions
In a large pot over high heat, bring water to boil for noodles.

In a large straight-sided frying pan over medium-high heat, whisk together all ingredients except fish and noodles. Bring to boil; reduce to simmer. Add tilapia fillets, cover, and poach for 10 minutes.

Add udon noodles to rapidly boiling water and cook for 6 to 8 minutes for thin udon and 10 to 12 minutes for thicker udon. Serve udon in a bowl with miso broth. Top with poached tilapia and chopped scallions.

This sounds really good, I can't wait to try it.
