Childhood Passion Grownup Inspiration

My parents were visiting, well passing through on their way home from Florida, this past weekend and as usual we started talking about the the stuff we used to do as a family when I was young.

When I was growing up every year we would take a vacation by car across county.  We had so much fun, and I had the opportunity to see 48 of our beautiful states, and Canada.  The reason we were talking about this is because my sister and I are leaving on our road trip from Chicago to Myrtle Beach this Sunday and we were talking about the cost of the trip.

My dad told me that back in the early 70's we would take a 2 - 3 week vacations, for a family of 5, and it would cost about $300 - $350.  For my sister and I's trip we are going to have to double that just for gas, but I am trying not to  think about it, I am really looking forward to getting away.

Now this is not what I wanted to talk about today, so let me get back on track.  My mom was telling stories about all the stuff my sister, brother and I used to collect.

I was really into rocks!  I mean really into them.  I had to get rocks from all of our stops, and my mom was talking about how my collection used to weigh the van down.  Hearing that brought up lots of memories of collecting those rocks, and the collection I had. I still love rocks today!

I think my love of rocks as a child led me to jewelry making.  I love working with all types of gemstones and lake stones when I am creating.

What did you collect or were passionate about when you were young that still inspires you today?

  1. We have jars of rocks around the house, and rocks we collected all the way from Iowa to New York to the Caribbean. So I can relate to the awesomeness of rocks. Small rocks, big rocks, you name it, we carry with us every move.

  2. That's so cool that you’ve seen 48 states [& Canada]!! I'm hoping to see them all some day! So far... I've seen... 4? Lol! We do the annual vacation/road trip too! But- ours doesn't last 2-3 weeks. Heehee- we have 50 animals waiting for us at home ;)
    Jordan <3

  3. I collected rocks and blossoms from wildflowers.

    Nowadays I collect "supplies" LOL

  4. Fond memories indeed! I am very excited about our road trip. I will gladly continue the tradition with you and we can pick up a few rocks along the way.

  5. I still love crayons to death and carry them with me pretty much everywhere I go :D

  6. Ooh, I hope you have fun with your sister! I've never really collected much... my great grandmother got me started on collecting the state quarters, but I've got all 50 of them now. I've always thought collecting things was a neat idea, but frankly I never really knew what I ought to collect. :)

  7. I used to have one of those rock tumblers that would supposedly turn ordinary rocks into jewels - at least that is what I thought was supposed to happen. Maybe I should have read the directions.

  8. When I was young I would collect these prickly seeds from our trees because my cousin told me that sometimes they were filled with gold. I'm not sure how this has influenced me, but I certainly hope it does somehow because those things were super prickly.

  9. Your trip sounds super, bet you can't wait! We take a trip once a summer with our girls and we're trying to see as much of the US as we can! We just started a couple of years ago, we're heading south in the late summer! I'm not sure what I collected... animals probably! ;)

  10. I too brought home pails full of rocks on family trips! and tumbled them for weeks in my polisher trying to make jewels like the pictures on the box...
now, 40 years later! many of the larger ones line the edges of my favorite flower bed :)
