Artist to Know - Robert Longo

Today's artist to know works with charcoal. All of the artwork featured are drawings, even though they look like amazing photographs.

Robert Longo

Robert Longo was born in 1953 in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Long Island. He had a childhood fascination with mass media: movies, television, magazines, and comic books, which continue to influence his art today.

Although he studied sculpture, drawing remained Longo's favorite form of self-expression. Longo's "portraits" have a distinctive chiseled line that seems to give the drawings a three-dimensional quality.

Longo projects photographs of his subjects onto paper and traces the figures in graphite, removing all details of the background. After he records the basic contours, his long-time illustrator, Diane Shea, works on the figure for about a week, filling in the details. Next, Longo goes back into the drawing, using graphite and charcoal to provide finishing details.

His work has been displayed in museums all over the world, in books, magazines, film, and on an album cover. See more of his work on his website.

Artist to Know - D. Westry

I received an email last week from my dad, who sends me all those random emails of funny pictures and videos, so it takes me a few days before I read them. Well I opened one of his emails last week and he sent me a video that was truly amazing.

Today's artist is a speed painter. I have never seen a speed painter and it was very cool to watch. Take a minute in a half and check out this video.

Artist To Know - Cornelia Konards

Cornelia Konrads

German born artist Cornelia Konrads creates amazing permanent and temporary sculptures for parks, public spaces, and private gardens.

She creates large-scale installations that give the illusion of weightlessness. Using things like logs and bricks that are suspended in mid-air and  look like they are created by an "invisible" force.

Her work is original and inspiring.

Art That Feels the Music

Artists amaze me.  Today's artist creates a collection of abstract photographs with the use of paint, music, and his camera.

Martin Klimas

Martin Klimas begins his process with splatters of paint positioned over a speaker. Then the volume is turned up.

The vibration of the speaker sends the paint aloft in patterns that reveal themselves through the lens of his camera.

Klimas spent six months and about 1,000 shots to produce the final images from his studio in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The resulting images are Klimas’s attempt to answer the question “What does music look like?”

Artist to Know - Lorenzo Duran

Lorenzo Duran

Lorenzo Duran a Spanish artist, and has been creating since he was a child. He started his career as a painter until one day he saw a caterpillar eating a leaf and thought to himself cut paper.

Instead of paper he uses leaves as his canvas. His process begins on paper coming up with his design, then he carefully washes each leaf, drys it, and cuts in his designs with a very sharp scalpel.

He believes that every natural object or living being is art in it's purest essence. The colors of a butterfly, mineral crystal, the majestic tree, etc., are a form of art that delights the senses and a good way for him to experience nature's creativity.

I enjoy finding inspiring art in unexpected mediums.Today's Artist to Know, Gesine Marwedel, uses the human body as her canvas and create unique pieces of one of a kind art.

Gesine Marwedel

Gesine Marwedel was born in Eckernförde, Germany 1987. After leaving school in 2005, she worked in an Indian orphanage for some months.

The experiences she made there, predetermined her future education as a physician. While in India, Gesine met with the skill of painting with henna. The Indians have centuries of experience in drawing on the body.

Since 2009 she had been working as a speech-therapist. In Addition she continues to work as an artist, doing bodypainting, hennapainting, wallpaining and paintings on canvas.

As you will notice, her style is mostly realistic or surrealistic. Despite the relatively good level of works for her art in all its forms, remains a hobby. We hope you will enjoy Gesine’s work as much as we do!

Andrew Meyers

As a child Andrew Myers was artistically influenced by european life and culture. Born in Braunshweig, Germany and raised in Ciudad Real, Spain, his exposure to classical architecture inspired the modern design found in his artwork.

He trained at the Art Instuite of Southern California where he cultivated his style and passion for the work that he creates.

His blend of modern materials and classical technique featuring a universal subject matter are prevalent throughout his work.
