Sometimes You Have to Say Good-bye

In business and in life there are things that need to end.

You may need to retire a product that you love but is not selling, or change your branding because it's does not reflect your style anymore, or stop working with a group because it's not benefiting you or your business. Whatever it is at some point in time you will have to say good-bye.

Saying good-bye does not mean it's over, in reality it's really just the beginning. You are entering a new phase and you need to acknowledge that change to move forward.

Even though making the change will be difficult, because you are used to the way thing work and things flow easily, it may be time to say good-bye.

Whatever the reason is you have to say good-bye it is important to say the words even if it's to yourself. The ritual of saying the words releases us from our present situation, and shows respect for what just ended.

Trust that what ended was good and useful, and now that you have let it go you can now move on with freedom.

Is there something in your business that you need to say good-bye too?

  1. Exactly! I do a review every six months of what works and what doesn't and change accordingly.

    1. Good for you Duni! It is such a great idea to schedule a review of your business every six months, that way everything stays fresh and exciting for your customers.

  2. I will reassess at the end of the year. I may need to say goodbye to my business Facebook page and some Etsy teams that drain time and energy but have no noticeable positive impact on sales.

    1. Recognizing that you need to say good-bye to certain things in your business is the hardest part. It sounds like you are ahead of the game!

    1. Remember to take baby steps. You don't have to say good-bye all at once. This way the change won't be as difficult as you may think.

  4. This year I've been working on finding focus and clearing away the layers of things that are just too much... it's been freeing at times, but still a mess at times too. Change doesn't happen over night but the end result is always worth the effort it seems. :)

    1. Janell, you are my inspiration for this post. You have made so many changes in your business this year, and have found what makes you happy in your business. Change does not happen overnight but you are right it is always worth it in the end.

    2. Oh thank you so much for that Valerie! Sometimes I think I'm talking in circles on my blog and maybe being vague and saying the same things over and over, I'm doing this, I'm not doing this round and round... but I really do feel good about things this year. Less is More! I'm learning!! :)

  5. I've had to do this several times with my business. I'll come up with a new design that I'm just sure will be a winner, but in the end, I had to say goodbye to it when it didn't sell as well as I'd hoped.
I recently said goodbye to my bottle stoppers with a photo on them. It's just too dang hard to make a picture look good a 1/2"!

    1. I have had to do it several times too! It is hard to let go, but if the sales are not there then you have to make that executive decision. I would think working on anything that is a 1/2" would be challenging :)

  6. You scared me with this post! I thought you were saying goodbye :).

I don't have a crafting business but I have a lot of lingering projects that I need to walk away from. They make me feel guilty when I look at them and I'm not at all excited or motivated to complete them.

    1. Don't let your unfinished projects make you feel guilty. If they did not work out as planned, you can always recycle the materials. I'm not going anywhere any time soon :)

  7. Lately I've been contemplating whether or not etsy is working for me. I seem to exert a lot of time for very little if any, reward. I recently opened up a shop on a new marketplace called Craftinest. Maybe I'll wait a bit and see how it goes as compared to etsy ?

  8. Funny you should ask. We are moving out of our downtown location in just a week. Had to say goodbye to this high rent location. It took me months to come to terms with, but now I am ready, and see this as a new beginning, I can now make things work in a way that fits my life - not fit my life into something that barely works. I look at it as a new beginning for sure. It did take time, but now I am happy to say goodbye, as well as hello to a better way.
