You Never Know Unless You Try

I recently submitted a few sketches to a gallery to be included in an up coming show. I worked on the sketches for a few days, and I kept telling myself I was wasting my time, but when they were complete I hit the submit button and off they went.

After I sent it I did not give it a second thought. I already had it in my head I was not going to get in so I just put it out of my mind.

Well last week I found out that the piece I sketched out was accepted and they want a couple more pieces.

After I read the email I just sat there shocked. I realized the piece I sketched now had to be made in real life and I needed to come up with more ideas.

I am very excited and thrilled to be part of this event. It will take me a couple of months to complete the three piece, they are nothing like the pieces I design for my Etsy shop, but large pieces that will be in a fashion show and displayed in a gallery for 3 months.

The gallery is a beautiful space

Here is a brief video of last years event

How often do you not participate in creative opportunities because you don't think you have a chance?

Maybe now is the time to put yourself out there and try something you have never done before.  There are a variety of opportunities online and off, you just have to submit your best work and see what happens.

Have you ever just applied to participate in a show, gallery event, or be featured on a blog? How did it work out?

  1. That's so great! Congratulations!!!! :D Will you show us your sketches when they're done?

I submitted a rather large and very detailed cross stitch to the Puyallup Fair, in Washington, one year. It's one of the oldest fairs in the USA at 114 years old this year. I had been told that with that fair, it's 'who you know'. I found my piece relegated to the side wall of a small display case. My husband at the time blew his top. I had to shush him b/c people were looking. The picture that won 1st place was a small, simple snowman design, prominently displayed on the wall with other simple designs. The second year I submitted a beaded Christmas ornament. The one that won first place was a beaded ball that was made from a kit....I recognized it from the Cracker Box catalog. If I had known kit balls were allowed I would have submitted one of the many Cracker Box balls I'd made. Oh well.

On the plus side, I was contacted by the US Park Service asking permission to use a picture they found on my blog of the Cape Cod Canal, for a web article!

  4. That is awesome! Congrats!! I don't even know of creative events in the area where I can submit but I'm usually hesitant to participate in craft fairs. Although this past year I did apply to a craft fair and didn't get in. I was bummed about it but I was glad in the end that I didn't get in because I didn't thin it would be a good decision business-wise for me anyway.

  5. Congratulations ! Your advice is so true. It is far better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all. Each attempt is a learning experience and with experience success is sure to follow. Glad you made the attempt and happy to hear you were chosen. :)

  6. Congratulations - a truly marvelous achievement !

You're so right, it is better to try and fail than to never try at all. It is from our attempts that we learn and gain experience and eventually, through experience, we achieve success. Congratulations again. :)

  7. Oops - sorry about the double comment. I posted the first comment but my PC sent me to a big, white screen E R R O R page and I thought my first comment was lost in never-never-land. Apparently it was not lost. :D
