The sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses for recalling memories. It can bring specific imagery related to your personal history or an object front and center in your mind creating an emotional response.
Experiencing different smells can be a wonderful way to inspire new ideas.
It's a simple process, when scents are inhaled they are processed through the olfactory system, which then sends the therapeutic benefits of the aroma to the brain.
Here are some common scents and how they can boost your mood and help aid in inspiration:
Peppermint: Energy boost.
Lemon: Revitalizing and uplifting.
Orange: Good for relaxation, and peace and happiness to the mind.
Grapefruit: Refreshing and uplifting.
Lavender: Good for quieting the mind before bed.
Basil: Memory and concentration
Rosemary: Confidence
The scent of lemon always makes me smile and gives my brain the boost I need when I am uninspired. When I smell lemons I can't help but close my eyes and inhale deeply, I love anything lemon scented.
Need to get inspired? Experience your favorite scent by closing your eyes, breathing deeply, and relaxing your mind. Once you are relaxed the ideas will start flowing.
What is your favorite scent when you need to be inspired?
I always carry lavender essential oil with me and I have in a diffuser in the bedroom aswell. I find it very soothing :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. :) Fragrances do evoke memories and seem to stimulate the brain, either relaxing us or invigorating us.
ReplyDeleteI always found that the smell of tangerines made me think of Christmas, have never figured out why, but it always has and still does.
I also find that if I'm at a farmer's market and walk past a display of fresh-cut sweet basil, I can not resist it and have to purchase a bunch. I do it every time. :D
I love citrus! Lemon, lime, grapefruit. I find them all very refreshing.
ReplyDeleteI love Almond scent. I know it's a relaxing scent, but it always centers me and makes me feel ready to go. . . not to mention sexy since it's the scent I usually select in my bath products too! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, that's so true! It works best with smells we knew in our childhood!
ReplyDeleteI read that rosemary is also good for memory!
Lemon scent has the same effect on me! Because of that, I always try to get lemon-scented kitchen cleansers and such. LOL =0)

Awesome resource about common scents!
ReplyDeleteI love knowing what the different scents will do. My favorite is lavender. It really is soothing and calming. I keep it in my sewing room and it helps me switch gears from whatever I was doing to focusing on what I need to do.
