Need a Creativity Jump Start?

Take a break

Sometimes when you spend a lot of time working on a project or a new ideas and you don't like anything you create, that's when it's time to walk away and take a break.

Have you ever noticed that some of your best ideas come when you are out shopping, or in the shower, or even at an event? Well that's because when we are not concentrating on a project our mind is relaxed and can see those blocked ideas freely.

When I need a break I go to the library or the bookstore. I read magazines and look through books of art in all different mediums, sketching my ideas as they come to me. Usually I come home with the idea I need to finish my project and several more to start future projects.

Figure out the best place to let your mind relax.

It might be cooking, playing in the park, sitting by a lake, or going to a museum. Whatever it is, take the time to recharge your minds creative bank and let the ideas start flowing.

What do you like to do to recharge when you need a break from creating?

  1. I like to leave my project out when I hit a block. Then when I walk by it I can see it several times. I'll move things around until I like it and finally finish it :)

  2. I usually sit on the porch and read if it's not too hot out, or take a walk, or check the blogs. Sometimes I get my best ideas right before I drop off to sleep and am unable to get up out of bed to write them down. I even keep a pen and pad in my nighttable drawer but still don't roll over to get them. all I can do is hope I remember in the morning!

  3. I like to get out in the country -- a lake preferably (but they are scarce in Nebraska) or the bike trail. I also love to browse in bookstores and look at pretty pictures on Pinterest.

  4. Oh so true! I was actually just thinking in be this morning...and I thought about how you said once that you do that too...just let your mind wonder in the am before you get up each day. That's kind of like a break before you even start!

  5. I love a day trip to rejuvenate my brain! It could be amongst nature or in the city. As long as my mind is relaxed.

  6. I'm a hopper. When I feel burned out on - oh let's say making jewelry - I do something else, sew, crochet, knit, cross-stitch. Sometimes I hop from one craft to the other and in a short amount of time I begin getting jewelry ideas again.
