A Small Window of Inspiration

Ever notice that you get some of your best ideas when you drifting off to sleep or right when you wake up. Those few minutes are when your mind is in it's most relaxed state, letting ideas come easily.

Being creative is an exercise in problem solving. Sleep facilitates insight that often solves problems, sparks new ideas and design forms.

When I wake up I try to take a few minutes just to lay their and let my mind wander. I have come up with some of my best ideas when I just wake up and I have started to record them on an app on my phone. For some reason if I move to much trying to get a pad and pencil the ideas start to fade and I can never get them written down exactly as they come to me.

Keep a note pad or recorder next to where you sleep. Having easy access to document your ideas makes them easier to remember and put them into action.

Surround yourself with things that inspire you and can help the process both in your waking and sleeping hours.

Do you find those few minutes before you fall asleep or wake up to be inspiring?

  1. I need to start keeping a pen and paper on the nightstand. I has always wanted to write down my dreams! Before falling asleep I read so that is what on my mind. Then I wake to the annoying alarm clock and do not have time to think. :)

    1. Writing down your dreams is always a good idea. Good ideas can come out of your dreams as well.

  2. I find that when I wake is when I get good ideas. . . I also get good ideas as I drive to work in the morning listening to classical music. I have so many ideas right now I feel a bit overwhelmed with the lack of time to implement...thanks!

    1. Music is another way to relax your mind and let those creative ideas flow. I know what you mean about having so many idea and not a lot of time.

  3. Yes, actually, and I didn't know this was a "thing". When I was teaching I used to sometimes give up on planning for a class that had a particularly quick turnaround and just go to bed quite often. I'd wake up an hour earlier, and by the time I did, I'd have just the idea and then I could get to school early to prep.

I really don't miss that though!

    1. Planning on waking up early and giving your mind time to wander before you start your day is a good idea. It sounds like it helped you when you needed it.

  4. Oh, this is so true! I have a notepad by my bed exactly for writing down ideas, thoughts or poems. I also recently read that the slightly alcohol intoxicated person is very prone to creativity :)

    1. A small drink before bed might be nice, and I love the benefit of a little extra creativity. :)

  5. This is so true. For me, it's before falling asleep and I even sometimes dream of those ideas! My husband talks about finding solutions to work problems when he wakes up.

  6. Yes, I do find this happens to me often. I solve 'problems' and come up with great ideas usually just as I'm waking up. Answers come with great speed, and effortlessly when I meditate also, probably because your mind is in the alpha state both times. I really intend to keep a pad a pen by the bed but...? ;)

  8. Wow, what you are saying is so true. Lately my mind has been overly inspired for some reason. Not that I am complaining about being inspired, but for the past few weeks, every night when I lay down my brain seems to go into overdrive coming up with project ideas. I wish they would come to me upon waking instead ;)

  9. Not so sure about those sleepy moments, but I do know that when you're trying to get to sleep at night and your mind is working overtime, sometimes you come up with things you haven't before. :) Of course, that's also when you make decisions for the next day, then promptly change your mind about the idea once the next day arrives. xD
