Garden Time

I have a friend who dug up half of the grass in their yard and started a organic garden.

Each year they eat out of their garden from May until October.   They have the most beautiful garden and almost any vegetable you can think of.  I'm so jealous!

I would love to have that kind of garden.  Unfortunately we live in an older home and we are surrounded by trees.  I don't have any good spots in my yard that get enough sun to sustain good growth.

The only spot that gets a little sun is on the side of my garage. I have put several containers (garbage cans mostly) that I plant a few tomato plants, peppers, and green beans every year.

I am looking forward to planting my small garden in my containers.  Hopefully I will have some time this weekend.

If you have a garden or if you wish you could have a garden, what is the one vegetable that you must grow?

  1. I live in the city, so I don't actually have access to much real dirt.. However, I moved last fall and now I have a deck! I plan to attempt to grow some flowers and a tomato.. that is the veggie that I love the most.

  2. Haha- last year we started a garden... We had a small one before- but we really took advantage of the space we had behind out house. Now we have a HUGE garden! Last year we had a million different foods- watermelon, peppers, tomatoes, squash, gourds, etc. But this year we're just going to grow the stuff we eat the most of. Summer squash, zucchini, watermelon, brussel sprouts, etc. :)

I love walking into the garden & just finding a veggie to pick & eat :)

  3. I always keep herbs in my garden. They are something that I know I'm going to use all the time and they are SO easy to grow. They really take very little effort, so they are ideal for me. I have had luck growing cherry tomatoes too. This yr I'm planning on adding several things that I got from my good friend who is a permaculture expert with an amazing garden. She gave me some organic seeds from her garden. They are sprouting now in trays. We'll see how it goes!

  4. I am so jealous too! We've got a cement patio for a yard. Not even one ounce of grass. And said cement patio? Totally in the shade. I dream of a day when we can have a garden, and a yard, and a compost pile, and a.....sigh.

  5. One veggie I'd grow? SUGAR-SNAP PEAS! I love them because you can just walk by the garden, pick a pea pod and eat it, pod and all. I don't like cooked peas, but I absolutely adore raw peas! They're delicious! :)

  6. We did plant a huge garden last year as Jordan pointed out, we got tons of food! The one thing I can't find organically but crave is brussels sprouts. They did terrible last year in our garden, this year I aim to focus on them and pick tons of the little buggers! ;) We all work collectively here, the girls each have their rows to water each morning and weed when needed. I figure we all eat the goodies, we should all work for them too! :)
