What is Art?

Art n. 2. a. The conscious production or arrangement of
sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements
in a manner that affects the sense of beauty.

Lately, I have been reading about art, inspiration, and creativity. In my readings I came across this question: What is Art?

Philosophers have been debating this question for years, but I don't think you can have a simple definition to describe art.

The appeal of art is the freedom from rules and boundaries, letting each of us create what we think is beautiful. Not everyone will see the beauty in what we create as we do, because of their own opinion of art. Because every one's opinion is different their are a variety of different art forms, and the variety is what makes art amazing.

So, here is something to think about, if we each have our own definition of art, and if everything could be considered art, then would the word "art" be void of meaning?

I think that's a tough question to answer. What do you think?

How about this ... is it possible to define art in a way that satisfies everyone?

  3. Art to me is anything I create with my two hands, whether it be a piece of jewelry, or a woodworking project.

  4. This is a great philosophical debate. And it does seem that if everything is art, than nothing is art. I know some trips to famous modern art museums in Europe made me question its definition. And nope, no single definition will every satisfy everyone. Unless the definition is: Art is art. Ha ha :)
