It's Not To Late

It's been three weeks since the year started, and we started working on the goals we created for ourselves. This is about the point when some of our goals get forgotten, or put on hold for other projects.

It's easy to not think about those goals again, because the month is almost over and you think it's to late to start.

It's not to late to start!

Consider February 1st as new beginning, and if you don't accomplish what your want in February then try again March 1st.

Consider each new week a chance to start working on your forgotten goal, as well as each day. If you don't get to it one day then try again the next. Don't let excuses like "I didn't get around to it" or "I don't have enough time", stop you. If you want to make it happen then it's time to start.

There is no reason to give up on your goals, everyday is a new beginning.

Have you ever had a stack of scrap paper that you just wish you could bind together somehow, with minimal effort?

Well, it's super easy, and takes about 5 minutes. I was making up a to- do list for myself (which you will get a digital version of for FREE when you sign up for my newsletter, or buy it in my Etsy shop next week) and wanted all the pages to be stuck together, so I whipped this up...

What you need

- Glue - I used ModPodge, but I'm sure something like Elmer's would work just as well
- Stack of papers to glue together- A piece of cardboard the same size as your paper
- Black binder clips
- Paint brush

Here's how you do it

1 Line up all your papers and cardboard (cardboard on bottom), and clip them all together so nothing can move

2 Use the paintbrush to apply glue to the side you want bound

3 Attach another binder clip on the edge you glued (but don't let it touch the glue), and let it dry

Voila! I don't think it gets much simpler than that.

I recently read a blog post from new follower Lisa of Soul Stokes Studio, about taking a risk.

She shares in her post how she is going to take a risk in 2012 and commit to building her business from the ground up.

Lisa's post got me thinking. I am good about planning for my business and coming up with big ideas, but sometimes I just have take bigger risks to see growth in my business.

In an article I recently read about being a better risk taker I found some great tips to putting yourself out there and achieving success.

So next time you are unsure about a project consider these 4 tips:

Create your own rules - Figure out what will cause you to stop your activity. Knowing that you can back out if you get that iffy feeling, lets you move forward without any hesitation.

Mentally prepare - Take the time to mentally look ahead and see all the steps involved, and all the details. By the time you are ready to start you will feel totally prepared.

Think for yourself - Tune out anyone telling you not to try, or it can't be done. Use your own common sense to reach a conclusion that is best for you.

Don't go overboard - Only take on one risky project at a time. If you invest your time into one project at a time you will increase your chances for success.

Step out of your box, set big goals for yourself, and don't hold back. Success can be yours in 2012.

Stop Planning and Start Doing

At the beginning of a new year we are full of ideas, plans, and goals.

After a few weeks we loose our luster and some of our plans fade into the background or are forgotten all together.

Today I have 5 ideas to help you to get from thinking about starting a major project to actually completing one.

• Work first thing in the morning - it's the perfect time to work on projects before the metal clutter of daily life sinks in and consumes your thoughts.

• Work in short blocks of time - 15 to 30 minutes at a time. A daily commitment will make you feel less under pressure and more in control of your time.

• Break down larger goals into smaller ones - start with small steps and gradually work towards bigger achievements. This will give you more momentum to succeed.

• Reward yourself - small rewards like a piece of chocolate, coffee with friends, or an afternoon off, will encourage your to do more with the time you have.

• Make yourself accountable to someone else - sharing your project or goals with a friend or family member will make your work harder, and want to share your success .

All of these suggestions you have probably heard before, they are practical and easy to do. I hope this post encourages you to actually try one or all of them to start and succeed on your own personal goals.

I have done each and everyone of these tips to help me with my business and they have contributed to my growth. Working in short blocks of time is my favorite and I do this everyday.

In college, I took several fiber arts classes to keep me sane - while I'm a huge fan of graphic design (my degree), I discovered I much prefer a more hands on approach to art, not just sitting in front of a computer al day.

One of the best parts about the fibers classes was learning how to screen print.

Even though you spend more time waiting for everything to get set up and dry, having a screen with an imaged etched in it is a grand feeling. Once you have an image set in a screen, it's there forever (unless you wash it out with special chemicals). I still have my screen from class 4 years ago.

The problem with screen printing is that it can cost a lot to get all the correct materials (if anyone's interested in what those are, let me know and I'll be happy to point you in the right direction), and since I'm poor, I had to figure out a way to do it on the cheap. After a lot of researching, trials, and errors, this is what I've come up with:

What you need

- Embroidery hoop

- Sheer curtain fabric - the thinner the weave, the finer the detail

- Something to print on

- Screen printing ink, but you could get away with acrylic paint if you're on a super budget

- Mod Podge or some other type of non water soluble glue (I splurged on this, and now I use it for everything)

- A small paint brush you wouldn't mind dedicating to glue

- An old credit/gift card

- Wax paper if you're printing on fabric (to put underneath the layer you're printing on)

- Sturdy pins (for fabric) or painters tape (for paper)

- An image to copy (solid colors are easiest to follow)

- A thin black marker

- Scrap fabric or paper bigger than your image

- Iron (for fabric)

Here's how you do it

1 Put the fabric in the embroidery hoop and pull it as taught as possible. Put the hoop (aka screen) fabric side down on top of your image, and trace it with the marker. Make sure there's at least an inch border of extra space around the image or the inside of the hoop.

2 Flip the screen over and paint everything you DON'T want to print with the glue. This part is all dependent on how well you paint and what size brushes you have. Let it dry, then do a second coat - trust me, there will be holes you missed. To check for holes, hold it up to a light and look very closely.

3 Let it dry completely (I usually wait overnight, but it probably only takes a couple hours), then stretch out the SCRAP FABRIC OR PAPER (with wax paper under the fabric so it doesn't soak through), pin or tape it down. Lay the screen on top, fabric side down.

4 Get a decent amount of screen printing ink (or paint) on the old credit card, and while holding the screen firmly in place, drag the ink at a 45 degree-ish angle across the screen where the image is to be printed. Re-dip as much as you need to get the space covered.

You're doing this on the scraps first because it is the best way to test for any holes you missed. Lift the screen up and check for any little random dots. While the scrap is drying, wash out the screen with water (if you don't wash it out, the paint will harden and thus you'll have a useless screen). When it's dry, fill in the holes with more glue, and let it dry.

You can do as many test runs as you like until you're satisfied with the outcome. When you feel like your screen is ready, print it on the actual object and away you go!

5 To finish it off, let the screen printed image dry completely (overnight is best). In the morning, the paper is good to go. If you're printing on fabric, turn the iron onto a medium-high heat, and iron the back side of the fabric first (you'll notice that the ink looks like it's seeping farther into the shirt) for a couple minutes. DON'T move the iron around much at first - the ink needs the heat to help it set. Then do the same to the front side and let it cool before wearing or washing.

Mood Boosting Strategies

One of my personal goals for the new year is to have a more positive attitude.

On my quest to be a more positive thinker I ran across these 5 simple mood boosting strategies.

Appreciate the little things - each night before bed write down three positive things that happened to you during your day. This is a great way to focus on what's going on right now and savor it.

Find someone to share your achievements - it can be family, a friend , or even your blog community. The support you receive will reinforce all the positive things that are happening in your life.

Know your hot buttons - if you avoid all the things in your life that cause you unpleasant challenges, and concentrate on ways to get past it quickly, each day will only get better as you work to avoid these problems.

Get moving - if you take a few minutes when your at the bottom of your energy cycle, get up and move (take a walk, dance, or stretch) it will refresh your brain and push away that tired feeling.

Cheer on those around you - when someone has a good thing happen to them be really happy for them, and cheer them on. It will boost your mood and make you feel great about yourself as well.

All five of these mood boosting strategies are easy to incorporate into your life and will help you to be happy now!

Big Significant Goals

It's a new year and time to be inspired by new challenges.

I'm not just talking about your goals, but setting big significant goals. Accomplishing one thing (or several) that you have always wanted to do, but were afraid you would not succeed at completing.

I worked on my list over the weekend and I set myself three significant goals I want to accomplish this year. One is growing my blog and the content, I want Everyday Inspired to be a blog full of inspiration for your creative life, business, and life.

Celebrate Your Success

Inspiring Gift Wrap - Week 3

Only 5 more day till Christmas, the stores are packed, and you forgot the wrapping paper. Today I have lots of easy ideas for creating your own packaging with things you can find around your home.

Creative Filler Ideas

Pine needles - Trim your Christmas tree or one for outside
Straw -
Newspaper
Peanuts (in the shell) - They will protect your gift and the recipient can eat them.
Filling from an old pillow

Patchwork Ribbon

Have a lot of ribbon ends that are to short for packages? With some Stitch Witchery (fabric binding tape), an iron, and your ribbon remnants you can create these fun eclectic ribbons.

Office Copy Room Recycling

Their are lots of fun things you can recycle from an office. Look for colorful photocopies, charts, graphs, calendar pages, flip charts, anything over sized or colorful would work great.

I had an old desk calendar that I did not use this year so I turned it into wrapping paper. It has been fun creating my own designs. I am going to let my husband and daughter create their own as well.

All it took was an the old desk calendar and some markers. I just ripped off a page flipped it over (it was solid white on the back) and had fun designing my own paper.

Sophisticated and charming? Who would of thought pre-fall 2012 would have so many charming details such as bows from Burberry Prorsum, and adorable fuzzy pockets from Thakoon. I love these two collections because they make being grown up more child like and fun with these added details. As well as the very pastel color palette from Thakoon adding to the charm and the cute.

Last Day of 100 Sales 100 Days

It's been 100 days since I set my goal of 100 Sales 100 Days.

Ending Etsy Stats
Etsy sales - 55
Items sold - 83
Etsy Shop hearts - 135

I didn't make my goal, but I ended up with 55 sales this season and I worked hard for those sales this year. When Etsy changed to relevancy at the end of September my views and sales crashed. October was a tough month I only had 4 sales.

At the end of October I received a message from a fellow Etsy seller with tips for helping my shop come up in searches. I have spent weeks (and I'm still working on it) changing all my titles and tags.

Thanks to her tips and ideas, I started making these changes and my views tripled. In November I got 22 sales, which is more then last year for that month. So it has been worth all the work.

All in all it was not a bad holiday season on Etsy. I did reach one of the big goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year of getting over 700 items sold. I made that goal, and I am thrilled.

It has been a very busy selling season outside of Etsy this year. I had six shows this season and at my first shows I sold over 75% of my inventory. I have spent the last 4 weeks making jewelry like a mad women just trying to keep up with all my shows and Etsy sales.

Tomorrow is my last day of me being the crazy jewelry making lady. I am looking forward to taking a break. I plan to spend my days reading, preparing for my family coming for the holidays, and planning for 2012. Maybe I will start 100 Sales in 100 Days in the spring, and try again.

$2 Wreath

A couple years ago I was a bit strapped for cash but wanted to decorate my apartment, so I wandered into the dollar store.

The dollar store is spectacular for decorations, because there are so many! I spent at least $20 and decorated my whole house. I've kept a lot of it, and now I want to show you my $2 wreath (since it's decorating time).

What you need:

- Garland
- Ribbon
- Wire hanger (and something to cut it with)
- O-ring
- Thread

Here's what you do:

1. Take the hanger, undo the hook, and make the most circle-y circle you can. It takes some patience, but I believe in you! For a bigger wreath, use multiple hangers

2. Wrap the garland around the wire circle. Remember to keep a finger on where you started.

3. When the whole string of garland is wrapped and your 2 ends are together, take the thread and tie the ends to the wire, leaving long-ish tails on the thread.

4. Take those tails and tie the O-ring to the wreath. Make sure to leave a little extra space between the wreath and the ring so when you hang it, the bottom of the wreath doesn't stick out from the wall (I learned this the hard way)

5. Wrap the ribbon around the wreath (making sure to cover up where the ends meet, but not covering the O-ring) and finish the ends off however your heart desires. I tied mine in a bow.

6. Hang on the wall for instant, cheap holiday cheer!

Organized Quick Tip - Holiday Shopping

Pam wrote this post last year for the holidays. It's full of such great info we are sharing it with you again.

The holiday shopping season is upon us. Are you excited about shopping or are you dreading every moment?

Even if you don’t like shopping, going to the mall or a department store does not have to be the worse part of your day. Here's a few organization tips to make your next shopping trip a little less dreadful.

1.Start with a list of gift ideas – be specific and write them down (not just in your head), it will help you not deviate from your plan

2.Create a budget – research gift items on line, print coupons, and write a price range next to the gift item

3.Look online for the mall/store directory – viewing the maps and knowing where the stores/departments are located will help you determine where to park, what door to enter/exit through, and where to get a snack :). Even though you are there to shop for others, buy yourself a treat (I like caramel corn)

4.Dress comfortably – especially shoes (if you are shopping with someone else make sure they have on comfortable shoe as well)

5.When you arrive, park in a well lit area, lock your car, and consult the in-store directory and posted signs to confirm the location of where you shop (pull out your list and make note of location next to gift item)

Take a deep breath, get a snack, don't forget to pick up something for yourself, and have fun!

If you are indecisive, a procrastinator, or hate shopping all together:

•Do all of the above and go to the mall/store 90 minutes before it closes and in the middle of the week, there will be fewer shoppers - be patient! If you shop late stores will be a little messier and retail staff may be a little crabbier (being calm makes thing a little more manageable)

•Have a hands free experience – carry a small purse with essentials or use an over the should bag so you don’t have to juggle multiple things in your hands

•Listen to your favorite music with a MP3 player or iPod

Inspiring Gift Wrap - Week 1

Every year my daughter and I make the wrapping paper we use for all the gifts.

One year we stamped leaves with silver and gold ink on brown paper, it was very elegant and we had a lot of fun. Another year we used white paper and splattered paint on it, we even used newspaper and added a watercolor wash.

All these ideas were easy and fun. I have been researching ideas for this year and come across lots of good ideas. So over the next 3 weeks I will share with you some of the cool ideas I have found so you can create your own DIY gift wrap.

This is one of my favorites, the color is amazing. I have an old road atlas, I may be doing this on some of our packages this year.

Artist to Know - Zac Freeman

Today's artist takes recycling / upcycling to the next level.

Zac Freeman

Using stuff we toss away or throw in the kitchen junk drawer like buttons, old remote controls, pen caps, paper clips, Altoid tins, Legos, wire, and plastic bits, become the materials this artist uses to create his amazing one of a kind works of art.

Beginning in 1999, Zac began collecting junk, found objects, and general trash which he then glued to wooden substrate to form an image of faces of men and women.

His art works are made on a large scale (the pieces average about 28" by 35") and when viewed close up look like a bunch of junk that is put together with a hot glue gun, but when viewed from afar his pieces are impressive, compelling and beautiful portraits.

In the artist's own words:
"I was interested in communicating through visual representation in apparent 2-dimensional space and through the actual objects used for the medium in 3-dimensional space. It is very important to me that I incorporate the actual objects into the art as opposed to a picture or rendition of it because it better expresses the intention of the artwork. I feel the junk is more powerful being present. It is an actual thing to be reckoned with that existed in this time and place and carries energy in and of itself."

I love the look of this table setting

For several years now our Thanksgivings have been me, my husband and daughter, and my sister. So every year we keep things very informal and try to create a new ways to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner.

Each year I try to come up something different for our meal, I have put the turkey on the grill (one of the best turkeys I every cooked), we had chicken wings (a family favorite) instead of turkey, one year I created a 4 course meal, that included homemade soup, salad, main course, and desert with a very formal table.

I might try this for our table this year

We try to be creative every year with not only our meal but our table setting and centerpieces. We decide as a family what our theme is going to be each year, and my daughter, sister, and I have a craft day where we create fun decorations for the table.

These simple and creative Thanksgivings have become a family holiday favorite, and we look forward to it every year.

I’ve noticed a lot of bright colors with minimal details in design. I especially love the bright reds that I’m seeing everywhere from Marc Jacobs to DKNY. I love that red alone can make a big statement and really help you stand out. But it can be hard to create a head to toe look that is completely red. I would love to pair it with some neutral colors like a nude blazer or trousers. Or just wearing red trousers with a nude or white blouse. It would still look very sharp and make a big bold statement.

Life has been really busy lately. I have two shows this weekend, a two day show next weekend in Minneapolis, MN, and 2 more shows when I get back to town.

My main goal for the last few weeks is to build up my inventory. I realized that it's a little challenging to come up with new ideas under a time crunch.

I have been creating mostly of my staple pieces over and over feeling a little like a production line, but in the process of creating these pieces and pulling out supplies I get little bursts of inspiration.

Journal Prompt - Explore What You Want from Your Journal

I always thought that I did not journal very well. I only did it sporadically, I found it difficult to figure out what to write, and my journal never looked like I wanted it to look.

I realized I was trying to fit into the mold of what I thought keeping a journal should be, not taking into consideration what I needed from keeping a journal.

Once I let go of the idea of what a journal should be and asked myself: What do you want from your journal? When I discovered the answer the experience of keeping a journal became an important part of my daily life.

I currently keep a business journal. It is a binder with plain and lined paper, pocket folders, dividers, my to-do-list, and a calendar. I spend a lot of my time thinking about my business, and my journal is my place to get all the stuff out of my head and on paper.

I have always been one of those practical people, which I think is what made keeping a journal sometimes difficult. I would rather make business plans, create lists of ideas, and plan out my week. Writing it all out everyday gives me peace of mind, just what a journal should do.

So have you asked yourself: What do you want from your journal? It may make your keeping a journal and using is regularly a whole lot easier.

DIY Sandal Wall Hanging

I love my Vera Wang sandals, but I didn't have a great place to keep them. I didn't have room for a good shoe holder, and I wasn't about to smash them into a box or drawer. Then I got the idea to hang them on the wall. After a few simple steps and maybe 10 minutes, I had a creative way to store my sandals (and have they always be ready at a moment's notice). Plus, it gets them out of the way and up off the floor for when the cold weather comes - don't want any dirty road salt dripping on my sandals, thank you very much.

What you need:

- Sandals (duh)
- Ribbon - any width you want, I used some that found in my leftovers pile
- Buttons - one for every shoe. I was lucky to find enough of the same kind of button for my project, but if you're into a multi-button, or even multi-color string look, go for it!

Here's what you do:

1a. Lay the sandals on the floor as far apart as you'd like them to be when they're hung (don't forget to account for gravity) - you'll only need 2 pairs for this.

b. Lay a button slightly above each sandal.

c. Take the ribbon and stretch it out from the button above the top pair of shoes, through the toe loops on the bottom pair of shoes, then up to the button above the bottom pair of shoes. Add a bit extra to make a loop around the button, and that's your length for each ribbon. Cut one of these for each shoe. Keep the buttons where they are (so you know how far down they need to be).

2a. Take one piece of ribbon, button on top where it needs to be, then take another ribbon and put it under the first ribbon. The bottom ribbon should start just above where the button is.

b. Sew the button through both pieces of ribbon.

c. On the top piece of ribbon, measure the distance from the top down to the button (feel free to guesstimate). Go that far down on the bottom piece of ribbon and place the next button. Take another piece of ribbon, and repeat steps 2a-b until all your ribbons are sewn together.

3. Remember the extra you left for the button when you were measuring the ribbon? On the bottom end of each piece of ribbon, fold it back and sew it to make a loop. Make a loop on the top of the top-most ribbon so you have a way to hang it (I hung mine from tacks).

That's it!

I know, it looks like a lot of steps, but it's really not. To attach the shoes, do it just like you laid out your ribbon.

Streamlining: Everyday solutions to simplify

Do you lack space? If so, create little space everyday.

Before the holiday season is in full swing, make a commitment to yourself to create space for 2012. I know it is easier to say than do, but the benefits will be worth it!

Let's focus on three areas: 1) pantry/food cabinets 2) closets 3) studio/home office (the order is intentional - I'm setting you up for instant gratification)

All you will need for this space commitment project are bags. Paper bags (re-useable bags are fine) and garbage bags, that's it! Removing items from these 3 locations will be beneficial in creating space but also contributing to your community as a whole.

1) Start in the pantry/food cabinets by grabbing a bag and fill it up with non-parshable items. Often we have items we don't like or our family does not like and they get pushed to the back and contribute to lack of space. Now is the time to dig them out and donate. Check the expiration dates before you place it in the bag. Donate full bag(s) to your local food shelf. As the seasons change more and more people have a greater need for food shelf assistance.

2) Take a garbage bag with you the next time you go to the closet with coats. Temperatures are changing and many people are in need of an extra layer or a gently used jacket or coat. In addition to coats you or your family do not wear anymore, hats, scarves, mittens and gloves are also appreciated. Next take a bag to your closet or a family members closet and look through the clothing (accessories) and consider what can be donated. Don't forget to consult with family members before going through their closet. Donate items to a local charity.

3) Last but not least. Take 3 paper bags to your studio/home office. Label the bags with "trash/recycle", "later", and "now". The bags are for loose paper, files, catalogs, magazines, etc. Clean the top of your work surfaces, the floor, and your files by placing items in the appropriate bag.

♦ Throw away or recycle the first bag of items

♦ Make decision about the appropriate location for the bag marked "now"

♦ Slowly go through the bag marked "later" by removing items every few days until it is empty (this eliminates the feeling of being overwhelmed)

The purpose of the bag system is to immediately create space, de-clutter and ease of transport.

Benefits of making a commitment to creating space:
• More free space
• Helping others in need (tax donation receipt)
• A manageable goal to meet

Recycled Display

I have a show in a couple of weeks in a hotel and I won't be able to bring my tables that I can adjust to different heights. I was really bummed about this, because a higher table is better for viewing jewelry.

My daughter broke her bed a year or so ago, so we had saved the wood slat that were used to support the mattress. I didn't know what we could do with them at the time, but I made my husband save them anyway.

Knowing I'm going to need to add height to my table, my sister suggested I use that wood to create some risers. I did, and was able to recycle some leftover wood in our garage at the same time.

Used wood glue to adhere them together creating different heights

Here's how they turned out

We cut some sheet plywood (we had in the garage) and used that to top off the risers. They will be attached with velcro so everything can be removed easily to pack in a bin. Just some sanding left to do and they will be ready to go.

I will take some pictures after we get everything set up at the show, and share them with you in December.

People find it hard to answer questions about themselves and their creative life. But when we need too, we don't really think about our answers because we already know what were going to say.

Unusual questions make your mind switch gears and reveal something you never knew about yourself and your creative work. This creative exercise will make your brain have to think differently opening you up to a discovering a boost of creativity.

This exercise is really simple:
Answer the question below. Answer them fairly quickly. Some may seem ridiculous, but take them seriously. They will get your mind thinking differently and you creative juices flowing.

1. You've discovered you have a new superpower. What is it? How would you use it?

2. You've been asked to describe your favorite color to someone who has been blind since birth. What would you tell them.

I have never had the opportunity to see live performance art, but this would be an artist I would love to see!

Tony Orrico

Tony Orrico is a visual artist, performer, and choreographer. Using his past experiences as a dancer with Shen Wei Dance Arts and Trisha Brown Dance Company he uses his body as a tool to create his art.

He creates remarkable large-scale mock-mathematical drawings with a savant’s focus and a marathoner’s endurance, sometimes drawing for up to four hours continuously.

Some of his pieces are created using just his wrists and other times his whole form to create his massive drawings that are organic and highly precise.

His work has been presented and exhibited worldwide.

Wow, I can't believe it's been six weeks since I started 100 Sales in 100 Days. Unfortunately, since the end of September sales have been really slow.

Here are my Etsy stats since 9/22:

Since Etsy has switched to relevancy, my views are down. I have spent the last few weeks changing all my titles, tags, and descriptions, but it has not helped much. All I can do is keep tweeking them until I find the right combination. How do you like the new search by relevancy on Etsy?

I have started to spend a money on advertising. I ran a one week Project Wonderful campaign, and I did an Etsy ad for one week. Both brought in more view, but no sales, and a few hearts.

I think I will give both of them a try again, and start looking into doing an ad on a couple of blogs. I budgeted a few dollars to advertising and I am going to keep working on putting together a effective ad to try to generate some sales.

I would love your input on blog ads. What makes you click on an ad on the sidebar of a blog? Do you like catchy tagline's or is the picture more important? Have you ever purchased an item from a shop you found from an ad?

When you are spending money on advertising you want to have effective ads. I appreciate your feedback. So we can all benefit, I will take everyone's ideas and suggestions and create a blog post in the next couple of weeks.

I was never a fan of portrait art until I went to an art show that was nothing but portraits and I was blown away. The portraits looked like black and white photos on a very large scale. Up close they were amazing, the detail, textures, and lines used to create these magnificent works of art made me appreciate all the work that goes into each piece.

I let myself discover a whole new art medium and was able to take away that sense of detail and apply it to my own work.

Consider going to a museum or gallery, looking through a book, or even an online art collections you are not familiar with or interested in. Give yourself a little time to explore what the collection has to offer, examining the technique used, the perspective, and the style the artist choose.

As the holiday season approaches it's time to start working on what's important to help you meet your seasonal goal.

Daily we spend time on certain tasks to help our business succeed. Ask yourself: Are you doing tasks that will help you meet your goal? Are you getting everything done you need to get done daily?

I know I have been spreading myself around lately, and not getting good results. Recently I decided what was really important to me, achieving my goal of 100 sales in 100 days.

I created a list of all the tasks I need to do daily and action steps to keep me on track. My plan includes one challenging task and three practical tasks so I can achieve success daily. My printable to-do-list is going to help me stay on task everyday.

I have other projects I need to work on as well, but I am going to work on them using the 15 minute plan. Incorporating this plan will leave me the bulk of my day for creating new items and marketing my Etsy shop.

Want to be really motivated and see an increase in productivity? Decide what main goal you want accomplish this season and then make a plan. If you give it all you've got, success will be easy to achieve.

Lately, I've been putting much more emphasis on accessories. Accessories can really add the extra oomph to your outfit. And this fall I've seen so many variations of the clutch. I adore all of them, especially the Louis Vuitton because you can wear it in two different ways, folded over or open! :) Some clutches have color blocking, while others are just one hue. Whatever style you may have, these hand bags are sure to liven up your fall wardrobe.

Are you Pursuing Your Passion?

When I started selling online, my goal was to sell lots of jewelry. Jewelry is my passion and I knew the more I sold the more I could make. As we know if you want to make any money selling online you have to work hard and do a lot of marketing.

On my journey of marketing my shop I discovered blogging. I really enjoy blogging, and now I equally market my blog and my shop.

I didn't plan on enjoying blogging so much. When I started it was just to share new items and things I learned along the way. My passion for blogging has grown over the last couple of years and now my goal is to build a community where we can share, learn, and grow as creative individuals.

With blogging and creating jewelry I am pursuing my passion full force. I feel very lucky everyday to be able to do what I love and what makes me happy.

DIY with Kzieglerdesign

I had a pair of blue Converse sneakers that fit well, but never wore. I didn't like how they blended in with my jeans - I prefer a pop of color on my feet. One day, I decided to attack them with a Sharpie, and now they're purple!

After they were all colored, I set them in the open window for a couple hours to get the stink out. So far, the color's rubbed off on the laces a bit, and I haven't worn them in the rain yet, but I have a feeling the color won't run too much. Just be sure to not wear your favorite socks the first time :)

The best part is, this process will work great on pretty much any kind of shoe, just make sure to give them enough time to dry.

Unplug

The season is starting to get busy and finding down time is a little harder. Since my daughter went to college I seem to work all the time, even forgetting to take a day off.

When I do turn off my computer and unplug I like to read magazines and watch a little TV. Lately my husband and I have gotten hooked on Mad Men and anytime I watch TV we watch another episode (really good show, easy to get addicted).

I also like cooking and hanging out with friends, but when I really want to unplug a little light reading and TV is all I need.

Tell all your family and friends - the more people you tell, the more success you will have.

Announce your goal to a networking group - having people outside of your family and friends circle is even more motivation.

The forums are another great way to put your goal out there - participate in Etsy Holiday Boot Camp and share your goal in the forums.

Write about your goals in a blog posts - that's what I did when I started 100 Days 100 Sales, I put my goal out there and now I am working hard to achieve that goal. My plan is to share my success at the end of my 100 days.

However you choose to share your goal, getting it out their will only motivate you more to achieve success. So tell everyone about your goal and have a great holiday season.

Streamlining: Everyday solutions to simplify

De-cluttering small spaces

Do you have junk drawer? How often are you trying to find something that should be at your fingertips?

The task of removing clutter can be overwhelming. Starting with a small space can help decrease feeling overwhelmed. Once you have conquered a small space move up to larger spaces. Try the steps below for instant gratification:

Step 1: Choose a space to de-clutter

Step 2: Take a picture and print the image (having a before shot will be a good reminder of what to avoid in the future)

Step 3: Remove EVERYTHING

Step 4: Create 3 piles

Items to put back
Items that belong somewhere else (put away or give away right away – don’t start new clutter)
Items to throw away or recycle (dispose of)

Step 5: Determine the best method of organization, for example:

Junk drawer – divide drawer into sections with a jewelry tray, cardboard cut to size, silverware tray or purchase draw divider
Bookshelf – magazine boxes, book ends or storage boxes
Car trunk – milk create, plastic bins, reusable bags or purchase a trunk organizer

Step 6: Using your new method of organization, replace items and take a picture!

Is procrastination a problem for you?

Their are two types of personality types that are prone to procrastination:

Idealists - want to do everything perfectly or not at all

Enthusiasts - tend to take on too many things at once

I am definitely an enthusiast. I am big on working on several project at once. I read a couple of books at the same time usually a chapter of each every night. I work on a few projects at the same time and call it multi tasking, but not always getting as much done as I would like.

Knowing this about myself has made me cut back on trying to work on several projects at once. I still need to do more, but it does help for planning my day.

Knowing which personality trait you are will make it easier to recognize whats holding you back from getting things done, and figuring out the steps you need to take to achieving your goals.

My name is Rachel Anne Jones, which is why I often go by Raj--which I use as my artist pen name. I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from BYU, and so a majority of my work is in graphic design and illustration, yet I also run my Etsy shop, Pthalo Azul, which sells my designs and illustrations in cute little brooches, prints, and wall hangings.

My shop, Pthalo Azul (Th-Eh-Low Az-ool), is named after my favorite color to paint with: Pthalocyanine blue (sometimes spelled Thalo or Phthalo depending on the brand) and it is the warmest blue that comes in a bottle--painting with it is like eating chocolate without the calories--it's an incredible color. It's also very strong and intimidating to use, since it can easily overwhelm your painting.

I started my shop to sell the experiments I do on my own time. Most of the materials I use are ones that I wasn't trained in, but I decided to learn because I've always had an interest in how things are made, and actually making them yourself is the best way to find out. So, I decided to name the shop after my favorite blue, an intimidating and risky color with unexpected results. When I started to sell things (which took several months of tweaking my items), I realized how I could serve clients in a different way with a different medium, and it's fueled me to promote my shop professionally.

While laser cuts might not involve paint, it does help me with my paintings. I'm a firm believer that the more that you learn and know about any talent and any skill, the more it will benefit every facet of your life. So I would say that aggressively learning new and old mediums inspires me to create, and I try to keep track of what I learn and create at my blog (thisisnotacraft.blogspot.com) and that also keeps me learning since I have pressure to update the blog.

Artists from the Victorian Era also inspire me, and I don't know if its because of my proximity to San Fransisco (which is heavily Victorian in style) or if its because those artist did things that we have difficulty doing today even with all of our technology, but I find them endlessly inspiring.

How To Make a Ribbon Flower

It's gradually getting colder outside, but I always like to cling to summer as long as possible with these adorable ribbon flowers.

What you need:
- Thread, needle, pin

- 12-18 inches of ribbon, any size/color/shape you like. Use multiple strands in different sizes to create a layered effect

- Scissors

- Small scrap of a strong, sturdy fabric, like leather or felt

What to do:
1. Fold one end of the ribbon to the back side at an angle and pin.

2. On the longer side, stitch along the edge to the other end. Use wide stitches, and leave extra thread at the end.

3. With a new piece of thread, stitch the sturdy fabric scrap to the back side of the angled edge (where you pinned it). This will be the center base of the flower.

4. Take the extra bit of thread from the first seam and pull on it, scrunching up the ribbon. As it scrunches, start wrapping the ribbon around the center until you come to your desired shape and amount of layers for the flower.

5. Hold the shape tight, and fold the flat end of the ribbon in, to the inside. Sew zig-zags through the back edges of the flower and the sturdy fabric until the flower is secure.

From there, you can attach the flower to hair bands, bobby pins, or use hot glue to attach it to magnets, pins, or buttons.

100 Sales 100 Days & Pinterest

It's been a good couple of weeks. I have spent some time on twitter and Facebook promoting my shop, as well as on my new favorite site Pinterest.

I know, another social media site, but Pinterest is different. It's full of wonderful pictures collected by you and your online friends. Of all my social media sites, this is my favorite.

Never heard of Pinterest, here is what they have to say about their site:
Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.
Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

I started creating boards at the beginning of the month, and love having one place to save all the inspiration I find around the web. It's also a great way to save blog posts you want to reference in the future, photos to use in future posts, and a great place to keep a visual holiday gift list.

I also added a board for my Etsy shop, and when I add new items to my shop I share them on my Pinterest inspiration board. Keep in mind you don't want to use this site to only promote they do have rules. Click her for more info.

Last week I added 6 new items to my board and 3 of them sold within the hours of listing them.
